ALFAMA

So, our third day in Lisbon we visited the infamous Bairro Alfama and the downtown center.

Alfama is the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon and it is the old Moorish quarters. Now, it is the historical neighborhood but also the poorest in Lisbon. It is home to many a Fado cafe (the traditional music of Portugal).

Also in Alfama you can find the origin tiled buildings, which are now in every part of the city.

Alfama also has the infamous tram #28 which takes vistors and residents up and down the steep and winding hills of Lisbon.


Another notable building is the Lisbon Cathedral which started off as a mosque but then turned cathedral later on when the crusaders overtook the moors in 1147. Most importantly the cathedral has survived several earthquakes.


There is also the Castle of Sao George which sits on the city's highest hill. I had to take a picture since Saint George's feast day is my birthday.
